Of course, like everyone, the news of the Paris attacks a few days ago threw me into a state of despair as I asked myself “what is going on in the world, why is there so much hate?” But what I was more confused about than the tragedy itself, was how so many people around the world rallied together to support Paris when attacks of this kind happen every day. What makes Paris so special? Ah yes, it’s because it’s European and a pretty picture of the Eiffel Tower looks good on everyone’s social media posts.
I know it sounds harsh, but it’s clear that more people have shown their support for Paris than for all the countries in the Middle East and Africa who experience terrorist attacks of this scale every day. Anyone who watches Al Jazeera knows that literally on a daily basis terrorists are killing innocent civilians in planned attacks. I’m not using this as an excuse to diminish in any way the horror of what the French have had to go through in the last few days, but I just think that this amazing support that the world has shown them should be given to people from other parts of the world like Syria too.
Social media felt like it went into meltdown after the reports that over 100 people had been killed in Paris at the hands of ISIS. Facebook was a stream of red, white and blue, Twitter was overloaded with #PrayingforParis tweets and scrolling through Instagram was one Eiffel Tower picture after another. David Cameron even wrote a Facebook status in French to really show his solidarity. Nice one Dave, but what about all the refugees who you are refusing to help even when children are dying at sea; where’s your solidarity there?
Anyway enough of me ranting about David Cameron, he’s not the only one to blame. As much as I love Barack Obama he needs to (and should of a long time ago) stand up to ISIS once and for all and help the countries around the world to kill off all the terrorists involved. As you can see in the video below, Barack states he’s now all for helping France to get rid of terrorists but will he really do this? Because history shows that he’s done very little so far when it comes to ISIS. I know that David and Barack haven’t been getting involved in the fight against ISIS because they don’t see it as their problem. They also have invested interests in the oil and other assets of Middle Eastern and African countries. But we can’t go on like this. They are two of the most, if not THE most, powerful politicians in the world. They need to stop showing how sad they are about the latest terrorist attack and actually do something to stop it; stop praying, start doing!
